The Frenchman
Henri Courtine is the fifth non-Japanese to be promoted to the 10 th
Dan Before him, Charles Palmer (English), Anton Geesink (Dutch) and
two more Koreans have been promoted to Judan. Courtine was promoted
by the French Federation of Judô on December 10, the first to be
promoted by it at the highest level in life. Junta to Mikonosuke
Kawaishi provided posthumously by the French Federation. Kawaishi is
considered founder of Judô in France. Born on May 10, 1930, is 77
years. It is one of the most famous judokas from Europe, where his
talent drew the attention since the first European and world
championships. He won the European championships in 1958, 59 and 62.
It was of the few to achieve defeat the legendary Anton Geesink (first
to defeat the Japanese). This is a time where the divisions had not
yet weight. When the katas of Judô were still little known in the
West, he has taught, demonstrated and wrote books on the subject. It
was one of the first to present the Kodokan Goshin-Jutsu in the West.
He was also a director of sports of Judô European Union and the
International Federation of Judô.
